Pi-Ramesses

Pi-Ramesses
The northern capital city of Ramesses II built on the Delta at modern Qantir near the site of the Hyksos capital Avaris. Building seems to have begun under Sety I, but Ramesses II enlarged the city and gave it his name. Several poems in praise of the city survive. Pi-Ramesses seems to have been abandoned after Dynasty 20, and many of its monuments were used to decorate the cities of Tanis and Bubastis. It is currently being excavated by a German expedition that has uncovered the royal stables and other palace buildings.
